Christina King, the President of Lucky Black Cats, started her journey in rescue when she became TNR certified in 2012 when she and her boyfriend spotted a mama cat and babies in a neighboring yard. Hurricane Sandy was heading straight for New York, and they knew they had to do something and immediately consulted a local rescue in their area. The rescue helped provide the tools they needed, and the pair sprang into action, trapping the kitty family, getting them care, and quickly finding them homes. Christina knew this was something she was destined to continue! She started by volunteering for several rescues in the Queens area, soaking up all the knowledge she could from the veteran rescuers along the way. It was at an adoption event that she met Barbara Wolin, one of the many veteran rescuers, who also taught her the ropes, and the two formed an instant kinship. It was only a matter of time before they decided to team up and start a rescue of their own, and that is when Lucky Black Cats of Mew York was born! Once the rescue was established, Christina immediately got to work, and in her first year, TNR'd nearly 40+ cats alone across the Eastside Access construction site in NYC and lent her expertise to getting several cat colonies under control.
These days, Christina's focus is mainly on the administrative parts of rescue and teaching others how to trap, care for, and socialize cats and kittens, so even more cats can get off the streets and into loving homes! In her personal time, Christina has served 22 years with the Long Island Rail Road as Locomotive Engineer, and everyone lovingly knows her as the "Crazy Cat Lady"! That nickname might not be so far off, she's even saved cats while serving her route on the railroad, and has even accepted a cat or two as walk on passengers (yes, that really did happen). Hailing from Seattle, WA, Christina officially calls New York home and spends all her free time living life to the fullest!
Barbara Wolin serves as the Secretary of Lucky Black Cats and comes with tremendous experience in animal care, working over 40+ years as a veterinarian technician since 1980, where she developed her affinity for cat and kitten care. Barbara used her on-the-job training to serve her community, where she began caring for upwards of 12 cat colonies, feeding and caring for any cats in need of her care. It was when she met Linda Bryant of Linda's Feral Cat Assistance in 2003 and under her mentorship Barbara learned the ropes of true street rescue and recognized the importance of ending the cycle of breeding that occurs in these colonies all over the greater NY area. Barbara decided to participate in the Save Kitty TNR course, where she got certified in trap-neuter-return in 2010, and she continues to practice what she learned by saving any cat or kitten in need that crosses her path. In
2013, Barbara met Christina King at a local adoption event, where the two formed an immediate bond and decided to form a rescue of their own; and that is when Lucky Black Cats of Mew York was born! Cat rescue is a small community, and one thing we value most at Lucky Black Cats is supporting other rescues in our community. Barbara demonstrates that support by acting as a sounding board and dispensing her years of medical knowledge to other rescuers looking to care for their fosters. In turn, Barbara has saved thousands upon thousands of dollars for so many rescuers in the community by avoiding unwarranted vet visits whenever possible, allowing much needed funds to go to better use (and saving so many kitties along the way). In her free time, Barbara spends time with her family and friends, loving her many cats, and also works for Hunter College in NYC.
Alison Castardi has been volunteering with Lucky Black Cats since 2016 when she first partnered with the organization while serving on the Board of Directors for Long Beach Humane Society and L.I.C.K.S. It was after seeing the impact that Lucky Black Cats had on the community that Alison decided to work with them exclusively. She brings to the organization her expertise working with the "human side" of the operation, facilitating adoptions and many of the administrative duties that comes with rescue work. She prides herself on her ability to identify quality adopters and find them the perfect feline match, making for beautiful and lasting connections between the cats and their new owners! In the day time, Alison works in the media industry where she is best known for her cats and fosters making "guest appearances" on virtual video meetings, adding a little joy and happiness to an
otherwise lackluster day at work!
